The average American’s diet is high in a compound known as Omega-6. Omega-6 promotes inflammation. Why does gluten free seem to be the new trend? Because, gluten containing products contain a high amount of Omega-6 which will promote systemic inflammation. So cutting down on gluten containing products throughout your day might not be a bad idea after all.
Omega-3’s; however, are known to be anti-inflammatory, and these are your fish oils. The
optimal balance of Omega 6 to Omega 3 is 4:1. The standard American balance is near a 20:1 ratio. This high imbalance promotes systemic inflammatory diseases, such as: rheumatoid arthritis and even asthma!
So which Fish-oils should I buy, Dr. Clifton?
If your goal is a healthy ratio of omega-6’s to 3’s then I suggest a fish-oil that is high in E.P.A.. Fish-oils contain two compounds DHA and EPA. EPA is high in anti-inflammatory properties which is why I take Fish-oils that have a larger ration of EPA to DHA preferably a 3:1 ratio.
As always with everything in life and physiology: it’s all about balance. Consult with your local
health expert for proper dosage, and get yourself tested to see what your Omega-6 to 3 ratio is!
Do you already take fish oils and you don't like that "fishy" after taste that lingers? Try leaving your vitamins in the freezer!
